“Happy Birthday Jimi Hendrix” by Wayne Sorbelli Electric 6-String Lap Slide Guitar @ Island Guitar & Ukulele Store Key West

Happy Birthday Jimi Hendrix – Wayne Sorbelli here from Island Guitar store in Key West.

I’m sliding here on a handmade Electric 6-String Lap Guitar with a hum bucking pickup – tuned to “UNIVERSAL G” or better known as Dobro G (which is different than open G).

I’m going through an Ernie Ball MVP Volume pedal into a Roland Cube 40GX guitar amp and I’m using a Boss RC-30 looper in which I first played, looped and then recorded the backtrack with.

I started off thinking of Hendrix and his Stratocaster but then I turned towards the school of Trent Reznor and his Nine Inch Nails and more industrial sluggish stuff came out for the backing – so I rolled with it.

“Key West Strut, Slippin’ Slidin’ Funking Blues” Song written played & recorded by Wayne Sorbelli of Island Guitar & Ukulele Music Store in Key West

Wayne Sorbelli here of Wayne’s World Music and Bone Island Music – that’s  IslandGuitar.com’s brick & mortar music stores in Key West & Dallas,   Wilkes-Barre,  Scranton!

“Key West Strut, Slippin’ Slidin’ Funking Blues” is an instrumental blues/funk guitar piece that i’ve been writing for the last few years since i’ve been living in Key West. It is heavily influenced by my blues roots as well as the incredible vibe radiating from the energetic eclectically vibrating local music scene and it’s many local “Conch Rockers” and their addictive form of Trop Rock unique to the Florida Keys mixing American blues and country roots with Caribbean Cuban and Island Vibe sounds!

This is the soundtrack that was playing in my head the first time I cruised down Flagler Ave heading toward the nightly sunset celebration at Mallory Square, then onto one of the most fun music filled nights ever on world famous Duval Street!! While you listen to my guitar during this song, I hope some of the energy, excitement, and anxiousness that accompanies a great adventure spark your imagination and curiosity!!

This take of the song is an early one-take live demo and it is something that will have updates from time to time as I build my ideas.

Enjoy!

I used a Dunlop brass slide on one of my USA Reverend Guitars, good ol’ (Rocco #312) made by Joe Naylor in his east Detroit shop.

I recorded on a handheld BOSSBR80 Mico Recorder, one take, live at Crab Trap Studios in Key West, Florida on 12/31/2013.
Happy New Year!

“G String Blues” Wayne Sorbelli @ Island Guitar Music Store Key West playing w/his Glass Finger Slide & Les Paul Guitar

Wayne Sorbelli here @ Island Guitar Key West playing some G blues with my glass finger – I call it “G String Blues”

Johnny Winter inspired me to pick up and try to play slide guitar a long time ago, then years later Derek Trucks re-ignited my passion for it.

This is my 1994  Gibson Les Paul Custom that I purchased brand new, but one year old, in 1995.

It was signed by Warren Haynes not long after I bought it,  then the Master Slide Legend Johnny Winter a few years later!!

I ‘m stringing it as I usually do – with size 10-46 Strings.

I’m not too partial to one brand or the other at the moment, as I see great qualities in a few brands and go back and forth depending on the tone I’m shooting for, or the mood I’m in.  GHS, Dunlop, Ernie Ball and DR are my go to favorites.

I tune it Standard Low to High EADGBe and sometimes Drop D for slide or finger playing.

Overall for feel and tone, I prefer using glass over metal slides – when I do want the CRISPY SHIVERS of metal on metal sliding, I prefer Brass to chrome.
